Your Spring Lawn Checklist
A month-by-month plan for a thicker, greener lawn in Bucks, Montgomery and Mercer Counties and South Jersey. Print it, stick it on the fridge, and check it off as you go.
Late February – March: wake-up
- Walk the lawn once the snow is gone. Rake out leaves, sticks and matted patches so air and sun reach the grass.
- Look for gray or pink matted spots (snow mold). Light raking usually fixes it.
- Stay off soggy ground. Walking or mowing on wet spring soil compacts it.
- Sharpen your mower blade and service the mower before the first cut.
March – April: stop crabgrass before it starts
- Apply a crabgrass pre-emergent when the forsythia bushes bloom. Too late and the seeds have already sprouted. Weed control
- Most crabgrass preventers also stop grass seed. If you plan to seed bare spots in spring, ask us first so we can use the right product.
- Give the lawn its first feeding of the year. Our fertilization program
- Pennsylvania homes: schedule your irrigation start-up and check every zone. Irrigation (PA only)
April – May: thicken it up
- Start mowing at 3 to 3.5 inches. Taller grass shades out weeds and grows deeper roots.
- Never cut off more than one-third of the blade at a time.
- Treat dandelions, clover and other broadleaf weeds while they are actively growing.
- Fill small bare spots early so they do not become weed patches.
May – June: protect what you built
- Put down preventive grub control before beetles lay eggs in early summer. Grub control
- Water deeply and early in the morning: about 1 to 1.5 inches a week, including rain.
- Feed trees and shrubs and watch for insects. Tree & shrub care
- Mark your calendar for fall aeration and overseeding, the best time to fix thin turf.
