When Should You Start Lawn Care in Bucks County? A Spring Timeline
Start too early and you waste product. Start too late and crabgrass wins. Here is the month-by-month timing that works for Southeast PA and Mercer County lawns.
Every spring, the first warm weekend sends homeowners to the garden center. But a lawn in Bucks County, Montgomery County or Mercer County does not run on the calendar. It runs on soil temperature. Here is how we time the season for cool-season lawns in our area.
Late February to March: clean up and plan
- Rake out matted areas and any leftover leaves so the turf can dry and breathe.
- Walk the lawn and note thin spots, salt-damaged edges along the driveway, and areas where water sits.
- Get your mower ready: sharpen the blade and set the deck high (3 to 4 inches for most of our lawns).
Late March to April: crabgrass prevention
This is the most important window of the year. Crabgrass seed starts to sprout when soil temperatures stay around 55°F for several days, which in our area usually lands somewhere in April. A good sign: the forsythia bushes are in bloom. A pre-emergent applied before that point stops most crabgrass before you ever see it. Read more in our guide to crabgrass prevention timing.
April to May: first feeding and first mows
- A light spring feeding helps the lawn green up without pushing so much soft growth that it struggles in summer.
- Start mowing once the grass reaches about 4 inches, and never cut more than one-third of the blade at a time.
- Broadleaf weeds like dandelions and clover are actively growing now, so this is a good time to spot treat weeds.
June to July: protect against summer stress
Heat and dry spells are hard on cool-season grass. Mow high, water deeply but less often (early morning is best), and keep an eye out for grub damage, which shows up as brown areas where the turf peels back like carpet. See our grub control page for prevention timing.
Why a program beats guessing
Most lawn problems come from good products applied at the wrong time. A planned lawn fertilization program schedules each step around the weather and soil conditions in your town, so nothing gets missed. We service Newtown, Yardley, Doylestown, Langhorne and dozens of other towns across Bucks, Montgomery and Mercer County.
